He was hiding in the weeds. It was then you saw his eyes. He understood. And he was trembling. An overwhelming need to protect him washed over me. Flashlight beams waved throughout the woods, signaling the sooner than later arrival of the Wardens. Our eyes caught. Opening the door a little wider I signaled for him to come inside. Relief flashed in his eyes and he darted out of his hiding place and through my open door. Throwing one more glance at the waving lights, I shut the door and switched the deadbolt. "OK, you need to hide." I said matter of factly. Taking his hand, I tugged him into the kitchen. "There's a trapdoor in the fridge. Go!

A stop light on the way out of town. That's how I met him. That's why I stayed. He's why I died.   On the way out of town, at a red light, I rolled down my window and lit a cigarette.
